Basement is the most sensitive part of house as it lies beneath the ground and therefore gets affected often by the pressure from expansive soil, resulting in cracks on internal walls of the underground room. If left unrepaired, the small crevices turn into larger cracks. Once the crevices get bigger, they allow radon gas, moisture, rainwater and melted snow water to get into the cellar.
Moisture infiltration in basement causes the growth of mould, mildew and fungus. This process of making a basement dry and watertight is known as basement waterproofing. Furthermore, there are 4 distinct methods of carrying out basement waterproofing. Below are details for each of the method.
Sealing of cracks
In this method, small leaking cracks or crevices in cellar floor and walls are sealed with waterproof coatings and sealants. However, for large structural cracks, the following method (injection repair) is used.
Crack injection repair
In this repair method, liquid polymer resin is injected into horizontal structural as well as leaking cracks in cellar floor and walls. Once the resin enters the crack, it completely seals off the crack and prevents it from seeping water and moisture.
Interior waterproofing
This method is also known as water control solution for the reason that it controls or diverts the flow of water. In this method, weeping tiles are installed to direct the flow of water from the cellar walls to a sump pump system that further sends the accumulated water to storm sewer.
Exterior waterproofing
It involves excavation around house, application of hydraulic cement to support the affected portions and installation of drainage tiles. It is also known as positive side waterproofing for the reason that it directly takes care of the hydrostatic pressure and puts a stop to water infiltration.
